Matrix Audio ND-1 is the dedicated audio DAC of the N Series, engineered purely for digital-to-analog conversion with a focus on transparency, low distortion, and a naturally warm tonal balance. It takes over all decoding duties from your digital sources or NT-1 transport, leaving amplification to downstream gear like the NA-1 or active speakers. With a clean, minimal interface and full-size desktop form factor, it’s designed as the reference hub for serious listening spaces rather than a do‑it‑all streamer.
At its core, ND-1 uses AKM’s flagship “dual-engine” architecture: the AK4191EQ delta-sigma modulator handles high-precision digital processing and reclocking, while a pair of AK4499EX DACs independently convert left and right channels in a 1+2 array. This layout improves channel separation, phase consistency, jitter suppression, and delivers outstanding signal-to-noise and dynamic range. A custom ultra-low phase noise femtosecond clock, plus an advanced DPLL circuit and optional external 10MHz clock input (via SC-1), further tighten timing and resolution for high-end systems.
Practically, ND-1 is extremely flexible: it offers optical, coaxial, AES/EBU, IIS-LVDS, and both USB-B and USB-C inputs, with full galvanic isolation on all digital paths to block common‑mode noise and ground loops. Balanced XLR and RCA analog outputs support two selectable output levels (up to 4.5 Vrms XLR / 2.25 Vrms RCA) and 100‑step digital volume, so you can run it straight into power amps or active speakers without a separate preamp.
A unique timbre switch lets you choose between rich, analog‑like warmth or faster, ultra‑resolving presentation, giving one DAC two distinct voicings for different systems and tastes.
